Starting in October 2025, Microsoft will begin automatically adding the Microsoft 365 Copilot app to Windows devices that already have Microsoft 365 apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint—but only outside the European Economic Area (EEA). The rollout is expected to be completed by mid-November 2025
What Is It?
The Microsoft 365 Copilot app is your new AI-powered assistant built right into your Microsoft 365 experience.
It helps you:
- Write smarter in Word
- Analyze data in Excel
- Build presentations in PowerPoint
- Use Notebooks and other AI tools to boost productivity
Think of it as a central hub for all your Copilot features—easier to find, easier to use.
Where You’ll Find It
Once installed, you’ll see the app in your Start Menu, and it’ll be ready to go by default. If it’s already on your device, you might just notice a new icon—no need to reinstall.
Can I Turn It Off?
If you’re part of an organization, your IT team can choose to opt out of the automatic install. But for most individual users, it’ll be added automatically unless you’ve customized your settings.
More Ways to Use Copilot
- Microsoft is also making Copilot easier to access:
- Edge browser sidebar: Starting late September 2025, you’ll be able to use Copilot directly from the Edge browser
- Taskbar pinning: Admins can now pin the Copilot app to the Windows taskbar for quick access
No action is needed on your part — just keep an eye out for the new icon and explore what Copilot can do for you.
How to Turn Off Microsoft 365 Copilot (Consumer Edition)
- In Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote:
- Open the app (e.g., Word or Excel).
- Go to File > Options > Copilot.
- Uncheck the box labeled “Enable Copilot”.
- Click OK, then restart the app.
This disables Copilot features in that specific app. If you want to turn it off in multiple apps, you’ll need to repeat the steps for each one.
Notes:
This only works on Windows and Mac desktop versions. You can’t disable Copilot in the web, iOS, or Android versions of Microsoft 365 apps.
