- They watch how you shop using “Smart Shelf Cameras”
- Estimate your age & gender
- Adjust targeted ads for you
- Allow instant price changes
- Collect and sell your data
Regulators are investigating, but for now, this is becoming part of our everyday grocery shopping.
Their new smart shelves use cameras and sensors to track what you look at, what you pick up, how long you stare at an item… even your age and gender for targeted ads. And those digital price tags? They allow stores to change prices in seconds — based on time of day, weather, or demand.
This is big business and lawmakers warn this could pave the way for “dynamic pricing.”
A couple of examples:
• Bread & milk prices rising during a snowstorm
- Morning discounts when stores are empty
- Higher sandwich prices at lunchtime
Kroger also sells shopper data, including your purchase history, location, and demographic details.
How to spot the tracking:
• Digital price tags on shelves instead of regular paper stickers
• Black dome cameras on shelves or at eye level
• Ads that change when you walk by
How to protect yourself:
• Use cash
• Skip the store loyalty apps
• Turn off Bluetooth and don’t auto‑join Wi‑Fi
• Wear a hat & sunglasses (yes, really – I’m not kidding)
Grocery shopping is getting high‑tech — and high‑surveillance. Share this with friends and family so everyone knows what’s happening in their supermarket aisles.
