Get ready — Santa tracking is back! Every Christmas Eve, NORAD helps kids all over the world follow Santa as he flies from the North Pole delivering presents. And this year, there are some cool new ways to join the fun.
How NORAD Started Tracking Santa
A long time ago, a Sears store advertisement was printed with the wrong phone number for kids to call Santa. The calls went to a military office instead! Instead of hanging up, Colonel Harry Shoup, the officer on duty, decided to help the kids and pretended to check where Santa was on his radar.
Everyone loved it — and that’s how NORAD began tracking Santa every Christmas Eve.
The NORAD Tracks Santa program is celebrating 70 years of following Santa’s journey around the world. Families can still enjoy all the classic features — the website, mobile apps, Santa Cams, and the Christmas Eve hotline — but this year also brings a few exciting upgrades.
What’s New This Year?
- Call Santa’s helpers right from the website! You don’t even need a phone — just click a button and talk to a real person at the Santa Operations Center.
- Talk in your own language! The new web‑calling feature can help translate more than 200 languages, so kids everywhere can ask, “Where’s Santa now?”
- A refreshed North Pole website! Starting December 1, you can explore Santa’s Village, play games, listen to music, watch videos, and count down the days until Christmas.
What Stays the Same?
- You can still track Santa live on Christmas Eve.
- The NORAD Santa hotline (1‑877‑HI‑NORAD) will be open if you want to call.
- The mobile app is still available for phones and tablets.
- Santa Cams will show videos of Santa as he visits different places around the world.
This is a great way to entertain the kids while Mom and Dad finish prepping for the holiday!
