Some of the ads you receive on Web pages are customized based on predictions about your interests generated from your visits to different Websites and stored in each web browser you use.
This type of ad customization is sometimes called “online behavioral” or “interest-based” advertising. Such online advertising helps support the free content, products, and services you get online. The Digital Advertising Alliance Principles apply to interest-based advertising and other applicable uses of Web viewing data collected over time and across nonaffiliated Web sites.
Using the DAA browser tool, you can control the collection and use of Web viewing data for interest-based advertising on each browser, by some or all participating companies.
This will also show you which participating companies have currently enabled customized ads for your browser.
Deleting your browser cookies may remove some opt-out preferences, so you should visit this page periodically to review your opt-out preferences or update your choices to include new participating companies.
I suggest you use the “OPT OUT OF ALL” feature to control data collection and use covered by the DAA from all currently participating companies in one quick step.
You may still receive other types of online advertising from participating companies, and these companies may still collect information for other purposes consistent with the DAA Principles.
Although I completed these tasks a few years ago, I was surprised to see how many companies were tracking me. My actions allowed me to remove a great number of advertising cookies from many companies I’ve never even heard of.
Google Chrome (my default browser) removed data from 99 companies
Microsoft Edge removed my data from 47 companies
FireFox removed my data from 12 companies
For cell phone users – here’s what you can do on your iPhone or Android phone.
Apple iPhone – Turn your unique identifier for advertisers On / OffFrom the Home screen on your iPhone, navigate to: “Settings” then “Privacy & Security”.
Tap: “Apple Advertising”.
Tap: “Personalized Ads” to turn on or off.
This creates a new identifier that’s all Zeros so you can no longer be tracked.
To find your Android Advertising Identifier
Open the Google Settings app on your Android device and click on “Ads.” Your Advertising Identifier will be listed at the bottom of the screen.
Under the “Reset” option, toggle the “Opt out of Ads Personalization”.
This will inform apps that you don’t want your advertising ID collected. However, it’s not strictly enforced and apps may still collect it anyway.
