If you’ve got kids in school here in Massachusetts, check your mailbox. Frontline Education — the software company used by thousands of K 12 districts nationwide — has started sending out breach letters after a major security incident on August 14th and 15th.
This wasn’t a small leak. The intruder got access to full identity data: Social Security numbers, dates of birth, driver’s license and passport numbers, Medicaid IDs, and student IDs.
And here’s the part parents need to hear. Frontline is offering credit monitoring for adults — and separate monitoring for minors. That’s the tell. Kids’ information was exposed.
Massachusetts is one of the states with confirmed victims — more than 16,000 residents already identified in official filings. Districts across the Commonwealth rely on Frontline for employee records, student health documentation, and administrative systems. So if you haven’t received a letter yet, you still might.
Why does this matter? A child’s Social Security number is gold to a criminal. Nobody checks a nine year old’s credit. That means fraud can run quietly for years before anyone notices — often not until the child becomes an adult and tries to open their first bank account or apply for college loans.
So here are the next steps for parents:
First, take advantage of the monitoring Frontline is offering — but don’t stop there. Monitoring only alerts you after something happens.
Second, freeze your child’s credit with all three major bureaus. It’s free, it’s permanent, and it blocks new accounts from being opened in their name. You’ll need documentation — birth certificate, Social Security card, and your own ID — but once it’s done, it’s the strongest protection available.
Third, check your own credit and freeze it if you haven’t already. Adult data was exposed too.
And finally, keep an eye on any school related accounts, portals, or health systems. If something looks off, report it immediately.
This breach is real, it’s large, and it affects families right here in Massachusetts. A few simple steps today can prevent years of headaches down the road.
According to state Attorney General breach filings and reporting by The Record, the Frontline Education breach exposed full identity data for more than 16,000 Massachusetts residents, including children.”
